In the North Carolina mountains, it’s not a matter of when to find fall color, but where. The brilliant annual show of reds, oranges and golds takes its time, starting at higher elevations like Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain and areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in early October. In the weeks that follow, foliage meanders down through Asheville, Brevard and other small mountain towns.
